Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition affecting millions of adults and children, characterized by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that significantly impact daily functioning, work performance, relationships, and overall quality of life. At Elevated Healing Treatment Centers in Woodland Hills, we provide comprehensive ADHD treatment combining expert psychiatric evaluation, ADHD medication management by a board-certified ADHD psychiatrist, evidence-based adult ADHD therapy, and practical skills training. Whether you’re seeking diagnosis and treatment for the first time or need better management of long-standing attention deficit disorder treatment, our specialized team offers the expertise and compassionate support necessary for helping you succeed in work, relationships, and life.
Understanding ADHD in Adults
While ADHD is often associated with childhood, it frequently persists into adulthood, affecting approximately 4-5% of adults. Many adults with ADHD were never diagnosed as children, spending years struggling with focus, organization, and emotional regulation without understanding why. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, ADHD involves differences in brain structure and function affecting executive functions—the mental processes controlling planning, focus, impulse control, and emotional regulation.
Adult ADHD manifests differently than childhood presentations, often involving difficulty starting or completing tasks, chronic disorganization and time management problems, forgetfulness affecting work and relationships, difficulty sustaining attention during meetings or conversations, impulsive decision-making, emotional dysregulation and mood swings, chronic underachievement despite intelligence and capability, and relationship difficulties due to forgetfulness or inattention. These challenges aren’t character flaws or laziness—they reflect neurological differences requiring proper ADHD treatment.
Comprehensive ADHD Evaluation
Accurate diagnosis requires thorough evaluation by an ADHD psychiatrist experienced in adult presentations. Our assessment includes detailed symptom history examining childhood and current symptoms, impact on multiple life domains (work, relationships, daily functioning), rating scales and standardized assessments, cognitive testing when appropriate, screening for co-occurring conditions like anxiety or depression, medical evaluation ruling out other causes of symptoms, and collateral information from family members when possible. This comprehensive approach ensures accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment planning.
ADHD Medication Management
Our board-certified ADHD psychiatrist provides expert ADHD medication management as a cornerstone of effective treatment. Medications significantly improve focus, reduce impulsivity, and enhance executive functioning for most adults with ADHD. Options include:
Stimulant Medications like methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta) and amphetamines (Adderall, Vyvanse) represent first-line treatments, improving symptoms for 70-80% of adults. These medications increase dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain, enhancing focus and reducing impulsivity. Long-acting formulations provide all-day coverage with once-daily dosing.
Non-Stimulant Medications including atomoxetine (Strattera), guanfacine (Intuniv), and bupropion offer alternatives for those who don’t respond to or can’t tolerate stimulants. These medications take longer to reach full effectiveness but provide steady symptom control without stimulant-related concerns.
Our ADHD medication management includes careful dosage titration, monitoring for side effects, regular follow-up appointments assessing effectiveness, adjustments based on changing needs, and education about realistic expectations and optimal use.
Adult ADHD Therapy and Skills Training
While medication provides crucial symptom relief, adult ADHD therapy teaches practical skills for managing challenges in daily life. Our therapy approaches include:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for ADHD addresses negative thought patterns developed from years of struggling, teaches organizational and time management strategies, develops systems for managing tasks and responsibilities, and builds problem-solving skills adapted for ADHD brains.
Executive Function Coaching provides practical training in planning and prioritization, breaking large tasks into manageable steps, creating and maintaining organizational systems, managing time and deadlines effectively, and reducing procrastination through structured approaches.
Emotional Regulation Skills help manage the emotional intensity and reactivity common in ADHD, teaching strategies for handling frustration and disappointment, improving impulse control in emotional situations, and developing healthier responses to stress.
Addressing Co-Occurring Conditions
ADHD frequently co-occurs with anxiety disorders (present in 25-40% of adults with ADHD), depression (affecting up to 50%), learning disabilities, sleep disorders, and sometimes substance use issues. Our integrated approach treats all conditions simultaneously, recognizing their interconnections. Proper attention deficit disorder treatment addressing co-occurring conditions produces better outcomes than treating ADHD alone.
Lifestyle and Environmental Strategies
Comprehensive ADHD treatment includes lifestyle modifications supporting symptom management including regular exercise (which naturally boosts dopamine and norepinephrine), adequate sleep (as sleep deprivation worsens ADHD symptoms dramatically), nutrition strategies (protein-rich meals, limiting simple sugars), environmental modifications (reducing distractions, creating organized spaces), and technology tools (apps for reminders, task management, time tracking).
When to Seek ADHD Treatment
Consider seeking evaluation by an ADHD psychiatrist if you chronically struggle with starting or completing tasks despite good intentions, frequently lose or misplace important items, have difficulty sustaining attention during meetings or conversations, make impulsive decisions affecting finances or relationships, feel constantly overwhelmed by daily responsibilities, experience chronic underachievement at work despite intelligence, hear feedback about being “scattered” or “unreliable,” or struggle with time management and punctuality despite efforts.
You don’t need to struggle alone—effective ADHD treatment can dramatically improve functioning and quality of life.
Elevated Healing Treatment Centers provides comprehensive, evidence-based ADHD treatment, expert ADHD medication management by a board-certified ADHD psychiatrist, specialized adult ADHD therapy, and effective attention deficit disorder treatment. Our team understands that ADHD isn’t laziness or lack of willpower—it’s a neurological condition responding well to proper treatment.
